Attention Eco-Warriors! Our WISE Thinking to Slow + Sustainable Living

Our WISE Thinking
FOR Sustainable Living

We are all a little anxious about the environment. SO, WE MADE a super sweet, simple acronym to keep your health and the planet front of mind.

What does fear like this do us? It can feel really paralysing like we don't want to look at it because it is such a big thing to tackle.

The proof is (unfortunately) in the pudding. 45% of young people have reported that climate anxiety is making their daily lives and ability to function a little bit bleak. 56% report they think ‘humanity is doomed’*. Yikes. (Grist, 2021)*

We haven’t come to tell you how doomed the world is. In fact, quite the opposite! There are PLENTY of reasons to keep fighting the good fight. Our weapon of choice at N+F?

Making conscious and consistent choices in how we consume our food. We even made a system for it.

It’s called ✨WISE✨ THINKING.

It is a super sweet, simple acronym to keep your health and the planet front of mind. Big brain energy.

W for Waste
I for Invest
S for Seasonal
E is for Emissions

One of our goals is to unite our N+F community in how we can make a sustainable change– together.

🌎 We know that being environmentally conscious is 'on trend'. Great! but you know that isn't what we are about.
🌎Let's think of every action we take as a vote for the planet we want to create.
🌎 Before N+F came to life? We thought 'how much can one drive-thru really do?'. It turns out a lot. Action builds momentum.

Look! Where! We! Are! Now!

Here is our WISE practice for a better relationship with food + the planet.

WASTE

We focus on reducing waste, from the start of the food journey to getting it into your tummy.

What does this low-waste biz look like?

  1. It starts with growing, transporting and cooking the food. This one is on us. This includes not creating more than we need, using the whole of a veggie in a salad, eating every part of the animal, having every spare shot of coffee, and experiencing grade-10 jitters. (Just kidding about the last one).

  2. Intuitive eating helps not leave things on your plate, and then in the bin. Check-in with how hungry you really are, so you don't serve your scraps into the trashcan. Save it for later. Future-You will thank you for snacks.

  3. Biopak packaging. If it can’t biodegrade or be reusable, we don’t want it. If you can, bringing a KeepCup makes a massive difference too. Did you know that all plastic that has ever been made, still exists today? Not the most uplifting fun-fact.

  4. Don’t throw it away if it can have a second life! Pressed Earth jars make for FABULOUS storage containers. Think nuts, grains, breakfast pots, all your favourites!

INVEST

Sometimes it can feel a little disheartening or foggy to be putting all this brain energy into taking the right steps for the environment. Invest is about restructuring how we think about it, to lighten the load. We aren't just going out of our way to fine-tune better ways of doing things. It isn't an inconvenience. It’s an investment. For the planet, for our health, and for our community.

What does investing look like?

🤝 Taking time to plan out seasonal menus, that don't just opt for what is 'easy' or 'expected' but optimise fresh, available foods.
🤝Pairing up with great suppliers, and building relationships with N+F that will last a lifetime.
🤝Dishes that make your insides happy. Gone are the days of salads being synonymous with boring. Not in our vocab. We want to help people opt for N+F over other 'convenient' foods because they really want it, not because they 'think' they should.

SEASONAL

You might be familiar with the season of Spring, known for flowers, sunshine and a solid dose of optimism. Have you heard of Kambarang? It is what the October-November period is in the Noongar Six Seasons. Represented by the colour yellow, it symbolises the return of hot weather, acacias, banksia, kangaroo paw and orchids.

This period of warmer change and longer dry periods in the region means an absolute field day for delicious locally-grown fruit and vegetables.

What is seasonal during Kambarang?
Avocados, berries, figs, limes, passionfruit, paw paw, artichoke, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, garlic, lettuce, parsnips, onion, peas, spinach, spring onion, zucchini.

YOU MIGHT EVEN HAVE HEARD OF THE BLUE ZONES. NOT YET?

It sounds like it's straight outta the Matrix or Sci-Fi era. It is ACTUALLY a system that identifies how people with the greatest longevity in the world eat and live. Their secret? Not Maybelline. Just damn healthy eating, active lifestyles and fulfilling work. Blue Zones are mainly located in Greece, Italy, Japan, Costa Rica and pockets of California. So what’s so special about these ~blue zones~?

🥦Beans
🥦Herbs and spices
🥦Cacao (think bliss balls)
🥦Coffee (no matter what anyone says, don’t go without coffee)
🥦Olive Oil

🥦 They eat seasonal, local foods!
🥦Lots of high-quality, organic, fresh vegetables
🥦Good sources of protein and fat
🥦Fruit (nature’s candy for a reason)
🥦Fermented foods (sauerkraut, pickles, kombucha, tempeh)

EMISSIONS

One-third of global greenhouse gas emissions are related to production, processing, and packaging of food. As a global issue, it is helpful to break down what we can contribute to a community and individual differences. If everyone believes they can make a difference, it adds up y'all.

What does reducing emissions look like?

☄️ Locally sourced food fruit, vegetables, and meat
☄️Vegetables like leafy greens take less water to produce than proteins (meat)
☄️ Less distance travelled = less food miles = less petrol = happy ozone layer
☄️ Highly processed foods or foods containing palm oil– a guilty culprit for large-scale deforestation and impact on plants + animals.

We hope that WISE has helped you wrap your head around how the little things add up.

If you already knew this, or you have more to contribute, we want to know! Teamwork makes the dream work, so let's be in it together. Let's share the load. We are committed to building a better planet, with you.
